58th State Senate District - Partnership Evaluation

In the 58th SD, incumbent Bill Stachowski is being challenged by former Buffalo Police Department Detective Dennis Delano. Delano did not respond to the Partnership questionnaire.

Senator Stachowski has been in the Senate for 27 years, previously serving seven years as a county legislator. His top three priorities are to cut property taxes, create new jobs and cut unnecessary regulations and reduce burdensome paperwork. He believes that the top issue employers are facing in the district is increasing property taxes. Senator Stachowski currently is the Ranking Democrat on the Finance Committee, hoping to become Chairman in 2009 if the Senate “flips”. He has received the endorsements of the Democratic, Conservative & Working Families parties.

Based on the questionnaire, Senator Stachowski and the Partnership have different perspectives on certain Partnership priorities, specifically labor oriented issues. He supports linking wage and apprenticeship requirement to economic development incentives, supports requiring employers to pay for employee sick leave and does not support legislation requiring unions to notify its membership of their right to refuse to pay for union political activities.

That said, Senator Stachowski is the only Democratic Senator to be endorsed by New York State Business Council and he is fiscally conservative.

To increase private sector investment and jobs in Buffalo Niagara, he would propose the creation of a “one-stop shop” economic development center.

  • Voted “yes” on the TIF Bill, which the Partnership supports, and has been a strong advocate for brownfield reform
  • Supports linking wage and apprenticeship requirement to economic development incentives, supports requiring employers to pay for employee sick leave and does not support legislation requiring unions to notify its membership of their right to refuse to pay for union political activities
  • Opposes legislation allowing for a referendum for a state constitutional convention
