The Buffalo Niagara Partnership is pleased to present the 2022 BN360 Spotlight Professionals.

Each year, BN360 highlights up-and-coming young professionals who strive for professional growth and development, care for their community, and are passionate about the future of the Buffalo Niagara region.

Anastasia McCarthy  |  Associate Attorney  | Hurwitz & Fine, P.C.

As an Associate Attorney at Hurwitz & Fine, P.C. and President-Elect of the WNY Chapter of the Women’s Bar Association of the State of NY, Anastasia McCarthy has achieved great success early in her career. She has been recognized as a “Rising Star” by Super Lawyers, as One to Watch on the Best Lawyers list, and as an “Up and Coming Attorney” by The Daily Record. Anastasia was also honored as one of Buffalo Business First’s 2021 IDEA (Inclusion Diversity Equity Awareness) award winners.

Anastasia places a special emphasis on diversity and inclusion, evident in her membership in the National LGBT Bar Association as well as her active role in Hurwitz & Fine’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee, where she spearheads ideas that benefit both the office and the community at large. She is also active within the region through her membership in the Young Professionals Board of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Erie, Niagara, and the Southern Tier, an organization dedicated to making an impact on the lives of children in our community through providing strong adult role models.

First Job:

Scooping ice cream and serving donuts at Buckman’s Bakery in Greece, NY.

Greatest Professional Win:

In the workplace, I am very proud of my role in helping my firm roll out its Diversity & Inclusion Committee. One of my favorite programs hosted by the Committee is our now annual Summer Diversity Clerkship for current law students historically underrepresented in the legal profession.

Outside of the office, I am very proud of the work that I have done through the Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York (at both the state and local levels). Among other things, the organization works for the passage of legislation serving the needs of women and children in the State of New York.

Best Piece of Professional Advice:

Be proactive–know what you need to get done and who can help you accomplish your goal.

Community Engagement:

  • President-Elect, WBASNY-WNY Chapter (will assume Presidency June 1, 2022) and Co-Chair of WBASNY (State) Legislation Committee
  • Member of Bar Association of Erie County
  • Member of National LGBT Bar Association
  • Member of the Young Professionals Board, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Erie, Niagara, and the Southern Tier

Thoughts on Living, Working, and Playing in Buffalo Niagara:

I love living and working in Buffalo. We have a tight-knit and collegial legal community, great food, and there’s always something to do!

On Being a BN360 Spotlight Professional:

I am honored!

2021 Takeaway:

Be flexible! There are always going to be factors you cannot control and learning to pivot will last long after the conclusion of the pandemic.

The Pandemic’s Career Impact:

Honestly, the pandemic really lit a fire under me and renewed my commitment to my profession and extracurriculars. I am motivated to serve the needs of my clients, my colleagues, and my family each and every day.
